Cleaners Shoreditch Health and Safety Policy
Cleaners Shoreditch is committed to maintaining the highest standards of health and safety for our staff, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial cleaning services across our service area. Our goal is to provide a clean, hygienic and safe environment while preventing accidents, injuries and work-related ill health.
Policy Objectives
The objectives of this health and safety policy are to prevent harm, promote safe working practices and comply with all relevant health and safety requirements. We aim to continually improve our performance, minimise hazards arising from cleaning activities and ensure that all work is planned and carried out safely and responsibly.
Health and safety is an integral part of how we operate. We expect every member of our team to take responsibility for their own safety and for the safety of those who may be affected by their work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Cleaners Shoreditch has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and ensuring that effective health and safety arrangements are in place. This includes providing suitable resources, training and supervision so that work is carried out safely and in accordance with agreed procedures.
Management will regularly review and update this policy, monitor performance, investigate incidents and near misses, and take appropriate action where shortcomings are identified. We will ensure that risk assessments are carried out, recorded and communicated, and that safe systems of work are developed for all key cleaning tasks.
Employee Responsibilities
Every cleaner and member of staff is required to cooperate with this policy and any associated procedures. Employees must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must follow training, use equipment correctly and report any hazards, incidents or concerns without delay.
Staff are expected to:
Attend all required health and safety training sessions, follow safe working methods, use personal protective equipment as instructed, keep work areas tidy and free from avoidable risks, and immediately inform a supervisor of any accident, near miss, faulty equipment or unsafe condition.
Risk Assessments and Safe Working Practices
Cleaners Shoreditch carries out suitable and proportionate risk assessments for all regular cleaning operations and for any specialist tasks, such as high-level cleaning or intensive deep cleaning. These assessments consider potential risks including slips and trips, manual handling, exposure to cleaning chemicals, electrical safety, lone working and interaction with clients or the public.
On the basis of these risk assessments we develop clear safe working practices. Staff are briefed on these instructions and are required to follow them in full. We review risk assessments regularly and whenever there is a significant change in work methods, equipment or the working environment.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals
Cleaning chemicals and substances are selected with safety, environmental impact and effectiveness in mind. We ensure that products are labelled correctly and that information on safe use is available and understood by our staff.
Employees are trained in the correct dilution, application and storage of chemicals and must never mix products or use them in a way that is inconsistent with manufacturer guidance. Where necessary, appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks or eye protection is provided and must be worn.
Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All cleaning equipment used by Cleaners Shoreditch is maintained in a safe condition and inspected at appropriate intervals. Staff must not use equipment that appears damaged, defective or unsafe and must report any issues immediately.
We provide suitable personal protective equipment for tasks where there is a foreseeable risk. This may include gloves, aprons, eye protection, non-slip footwear or other items as identified by risk assessment. Employees must use, store and care for this equipment correctly and report any loss or damage so that it can be replaced.
Manual Handling and Physical Safety
Cleaning work can involve lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling items. To reduce the risk of strain or injury, staff receive training on safe manual handling techniques. Wherever possible, lighter alternatives, mechanical aids or different methods are used to avoid unnecessary heavy lifting.
Employees are instructed not to exceed their own physical capabilities and to ask for assistance where a task cannot be carried out safely by one person. Work schedules are planned to reduce fatigue and promote safe, sustainable working patterns.
Working on Client Premises
When working in homes, offices or other client premises, our staff must respect house rules and any safety instructions provided. They must conduct themselves in a professional and responsible manner at all times, ensuring that their work does not put occupants, visitors or the public at risk.
Cables, cleaning machines, wet floors and cleaning materials must be managed carefully to avoid trip hazards or accidental contact. Warning signs are used where appropriate, and staff are trained to leave each area tidy and safe on completion of work.
Health, Welfare and Training
Cleaners Shoreditch recognises the importance of good health, welfare and wellbeing for all staff. We provide induction training and ongoing refresher training covering health and safety awareness, safe use of chemicals, equipment operation, emergency procedures and incident reporting.
Employees are encouraged to raise any health concerns that may affect their ability to perform cleaning duties safely. We will consider reasonable adjustments where practicable and support staff in accessing appropriate medical or occupational health advice when needed.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and hazardous incidents must be reported promptly to management. This allows us to investigate, learn lessons and put measures in place to prevent a recurrence. Accurate records are maintained and reviewed as part of our continuous improvement process.
Staff are instructed in emergency procedures relevant to their work, including fire safety, safe evacuation, dealing with spillages and handling any suspected exposure to harmful substances. When working on client sites, employees must familiarise themselves with local emergency arrangements and follow all instructions from responsible persons.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This health and safety policy is monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure it remains effective and relevant to our cleaning operations and service areas. We review the policy regularly and whenever there are significant changes in legislation, work activities or organisational structure.
Feedback from staff and clients is encouraged and used to improve our approach. Cleaners Shoreditch is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance, so that we can provide reliable, high-quality cleaning services in an environment that protects everyone involved.
